On May 21, according to foreign media reports, Indonesian Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia revealed that Tesla has agreed to invest in the construction of electric vehicle and battery factories in Indonesia, and said that Tesla will enter Indonesia this year.
However, Bahlil Lahadalia said that he could not disclose the specific month when Tesla entered Indonesia, because the two sides have not yet signed an agreement, and the specific investment amount of Tesla is still in a state of confidentiality, and it needs to wait for a formal agreement to be signed.
Judging from foreign media reports, Tesla has been in frequent contact with Indonesia recently. A team from Indonesia and Tesla is negotiating. Many senior officials from Indonesia have visited Texas in recent weeks. Tesla CEO Elon Musk had a meeting.
Indonesian local media said in a report that Bahlil Lahadalia revealed that Tesla is considering building an electric vehicle factory in Central Java. The Indonesian and Tesla teams are negotiating on this, and they hope to reach a reliable investment plan by the end of the year.
Indonesia, which is rich in nickel ore resources, has become the investment target of many electric vehicle battery manufacturers and electric vehicle manufacturers. The joint venture battery factory of LG New Energy and Hyundai Motor in Indonesia started construction in September last year. It was also reported in June 2019 that Toyota plans to invest US$2 billion to develop electric vehicles in Indonesia.
Indonesia is also using its rich nickel ore resources to develop batteries and other related industries. In January 2020, they banned the export of nickel ore. At the beginning of this year, Indonesia also stated that the ban on the export of nickel raw ore had a positive effect, attracting a large number of nickel mining investment, and the export of nickel derivative products also increased significantly.
